FAQs

What is the difference between a tailor, a dressmaker and a seamstress?

A dressmaker specialises in womenswear, cutting and altering garments to fit a woman's individual shape. A tailor does the equivalent work for menswear. A seamstress typically sews seams as part of garment manufacturing and may not have training in custom fitting. Michele is a qualified dressmaker with over 20 years of experience fitting and altering clothing for the individual.

Which garments do you work on?

All kinds — jeans, trousers, shirts, skirts, dresses, and more.

Are there any types of garments or fabric you don't work on?

We don't work on leather, wedding dresses, formal wear or evening wear.

Do you provide a dressmaking service?

Sorry, we only do clothing alterations.

Do you do tailoring?

Michele is a trained, professional dressmaker specialising in women's garments. Although much crosses over — for example altering pants, trousers and shirts — the altering and construction of suit jackets and coats is a specialised area and may require a tailor. Call first to discuss your needs; in many cases it can be a simple fix.

Do you make or repair curtains?

No, just clothing alterations. There are many good curtain suppliers in the Highlands.

I'm not sure what needs to be done, my garment just doesn't fit!

No problem — simply make an appointment and we'll work out the best solution to get the right fit.

Do I need to bring anything?

Ideally, bring the shoes you'll be wearing with the garment, and any relevant undergarments if it's a top or a dress.

Can I bring more than one item?

Yes, multiple items are welcome — just let us know when you call, so extra time can be allowed during the consultation.

Do my garments need to be clean?

Yes. Please make sure your garment is washed or dry cleaned before dropping it off — this matters for hygiene and to avoid damage to the machine or other garments. If in doubt about fabric care, get in touch.

How much do clothing alterations cost?

Pricing depends on the garment and the complexity of the alteration — a simple hem costs less than a more involved restructuring job. Make an appointment for an accurate assessment based on your specific garment.

Do you charge for a consultation?

No — the initial consultation is free. It wouldn't be fair to charge before we've assessed whether we can help.

What payments do you take?

Cash or card.

Do I need to pay the total amount upfront?

No — payment is only required on pick-up.

How long does an alteration take?

Turnaround depends on the complexity of the job and current bookings. Simple repairs can often be completed quickly, while more involved alterations may need more time and fittings. Ask about turnaround when you book your appointment.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes — Michele's Alterations works by appointment only, Monday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm, to give every garment proper attention. Call 0450 650 960 to book.

What's the best way to book?

Call directly on 0450 650 960. A short conversation is needed to understand what's required, so bookings can't be made by text, chat or email. For anything urgent, always call. If you send an enquiry by email, expect a response within one working day.

Why do I need to make an appointment?

An appointment ensures every client gets undivided attention, without distractions or interruptions. Fittings and consultations take time, so bookings are limited to keep turnaround efficient for everyone.

What happens when I make an appointment?

You'll be given a set time and a text confirming the details — worth adding to your calendar. Please be prompt on the day, and let us know as early as possible if you need to reschedule.

Can you do a consultation remotely or with photos?

No — garments need to be inspected and fitted in person to assess construction and get an accurate result. This isn't possible from a photo.

Do you do home visits?

No, unfortunately that's not possible.

Do you alter men's, women's, children's and school uniform clothing?

Yes, all of the above, plus work and corporate wear, and fittings for petite through to plus sizes.

Can you fix a broken zipper, ripped seam or missing button?

Yes — repairs and mending are one of the most common jobs we do, from zippers and buttons to rips, tears and splits.

What areas does Michele's Alterations service?

Michele's Alterations is based in Moss Vale and services the Southern Highlands region, including Bowral, Mittagong, Bundanoon and surrounding areas.
