WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TAILOR, A DRESSMAKER, A SEAMSTRESS AND A GENERAL SEWER? Tailors and dressmakers make handmade clothes, customised to fit your body perfectly. They can also take existing suits and shirts, dresses and gowns and make alterations to ensure a perfect fit. The difference between a tailor and dressmaker is primarily their clientele. A dressmaker specialises in clothes for women, whereas a tailor makes clothes for men. Males and females have different body shapes and different types of clothing that call for a specialised approach to pattern making, garment cutting and construction. A tailor or dressmaker would also be familiar with pattern making but may or may not have pattern making expertise. This is a separate specialised skill. Generally, a seamstress is someone who sews seams….they sew clothes, fabrics and apparel for a living, eg, a machine operator in a factory. They may not have the skills to custom make garments from scratch. A general sewer is someone with sewing skills who generally has not had formal training and usually sews as a hobby.
